Last night at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage and gave the most empowering, unifying speech of the night. She spoke about the social progress that Democrats have achieved for the sake of their children. They catapulted a black man to the highest office in the world, and they are poised to elect America’s first female president.
Unfortunately, the Republican party does not stand for social progress or for equality. Republican nominee Donald Trump denigrates women and slut shames victims of sexual assault. He attacks Hispanics and Muslims among others, moving America down a dangerous path of illiberalism and discrimination. His running mate Mike Pence is one of the most anti-LGBT politicians in the country. In Congress he refused to support funding for HIV/AIDS public health programs unless the government also funded conversion therapy and anti-‘gay lifestyle’ campaigns, and as Indiana governor he passed a law legalizing anti-LGBT discrimination.
Even if presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton loses in the general election, Michelle’s party has shown that for them the glass ceiling is now meaningless. Liberal voters are increasingly critical of the taboo against women in power, and they are actively dismantling it.
That is the story of this country, the story that brought me to this stage tonight. The story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done, so that today, I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And I watch my daughters, two beautiful intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters, and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States.
President Obama congratulated Michelle on her powerful speech on Twitter:
Incredible speech by an incredible woman. Couldn’t be more proud & our country has been blessed to have her as FLOTUS. I love you, Michelle.

Congratulations to Michelle for bringing the focus of the night to social progress, which the Democrats have been at the forefront of for the last 50 years. This election is about the people, and we need to elect a president who will stand for all people, equally. Trump does not do that.
Michelle is with her, and so are we.
