Today, the National Republican Senatorial Committee tweeted out a piece attacking the record of Rep. Tammy Duckworth for “not standing up for our veterans” – even though she is a veteran herself. They couldn’t have chosen a more callously cruel or disparagingly ableist way to express that – Major Duckworth is a double amputee, having lost both of her legs during the Iraq War when an insurgent-fired rocket-propelled grenade hit the cockpit of a UH60 Black Hawk helicopter that she was piloting. Rep. Duckworth is running for an Illinois Senate seat currently held by Republican Mark Kirk, who Duckworth criticizes for using “fear and the lowest common denominator” to rally votes, in particular by stirring up fears about resettling refugees.
It just goes to show how little the Republican Party values both women and our veterans – useful pawns for when it’s politically profitable, like when they pretend to care about women’s health when passing anti-abortion legislation or proclaiming their devotion our veterans on the campaign trail and then cutting their benefits in Congress. These unabashed misogynists deserve no place in our political discourse if they’re going to resort to such petty attacks.
