A Georgia high school is embroiled in controversy after a male teacher verbally assaulted a student during class. Shaniaya Hunter, a junior at Green County High School, was humiliated by her male teacher after asking a question that upset him during class in December. Through a tearful interview, Hunter claims that her male teacher called her “dumb” and added that her “purpose in life was to have sex and children.”
According to WSB-TV reports, the incident was recorded on Hunter’s school issued iPad. In the recording, a male voice is heard saying, “I have been around 37 years, and clearly, you are the dumbest girl I have ever met… You know what your purpose is going to be? To have sex and children because you ain’t never gonna be smart.”

The classroom incident was reported to school district officials who have chosen not to pursue disciplinary action against the teacher. Attorney Ben Windham, who took on the case pro-bono after learning of the teacher’s vicious attack, is pursing legal action against the school district. “This man does not need to be teaching young children. It’s not a grey area. End of story.” Windham said.
Studies have shown that women face a steep bias in the classroom from their classmates and teachers. Research has revealed that young black girls are disproportionately penalized for being assertive in classroom settings, and that gender stereotypes overall negatively affect girl’s math grades. Young girls are up against enough without teachers telling them they are nothing more than their vagina’s.
